Team T & C claims another Oakley Surf Shop Challenge at Ala Moana Bowls
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 15 July, 2010 : - - San Clemente, CA - Town & Country has once again placed its heavy-handed stamp of domination upon the Hawaii Regional Qualifier of the Oakley Surf Shop Challenge. For the fourth year in a row, and Surf Shop Challenge record, the T&C team has shown up and blown up their fellow competitors.
While it was Dustin Cuizon, T&C Whammy Surfer and MVP of the event, who led the way to victory, no one man can win a team competition like this alone. Team captain Travis Hashimoto and team members Geoff Wong and Alessa Quizon held their own as well and there was no looking back once the first wave was ridden.
After scoring the highest team point total of the event in the first round, the team stuck with their recipe for disaster: send Dustin out, have him absolutely obliterate his first wave, claim it for a double score and have him come in, leaving ample time for the three remaining surfers. It worked in their Round 1 heat and it worked in the final, earning them scores of 36.0 and 31.76, respectively.
Although T&C earned the win again, it was not a guarantee from the beginning. Last year's second place team, Quiksilver North Shore Boardriders, came back to prove that their 2006 regional victory was not all they could offer by bringing in longtime team member Brennan Boudreau, as well as Vince Brady, Derek Wong, and Andy Morishita. In the end, the Quik quartet made a serious run for the prize, but fell short by a less than half a point and had to settle once again for a disappointing second place finish. "Ahh, brah. If I would have just had one more turn, I think we could have won," said Boudreau after narrowly losing to T&C. "Ahh well, next yearâ?¦We'll get 'em next year."
As the Hawaii Regional Champ, Town & Country will head to Huntington Beach, California, on September 9, where they will face Heritage, Hansen's, Jack's, Sweetwater, and the two yet-to-be-determined Southeast and Northwest Regional Champions in what will surely be an epic battle for the National Title. "Yeah, I think we'll be ready this year at Nationals," said Hashimoto. "We're not all really used to surfing the waves on the Mainland, but we're all really stoked on today's win and looking forward to Nationals."
Regional winners this year will not only earn an expense-paid trip to the national championship for the opportunity to win the $10,000 grand prize, but each will also receive a full page shop profile in SURFER Magazine, a supply of Muscle Milk, a set of 59 custom New Era hats designed by the winning shops, two Firewire Surfboards, two custom Buell Wetsuits and product from all event sponsors.
